The Seasons Change

By Megan Pederson

Snow sits on the ground in great mounds, each snowflake with a unique shape and look.

Similar to humans, not one snowflake looks the same.

Children cherish their time in the snow, knowing it will all melt away soon,

leaving the lakes and rivers flooded.

Though, it is not all bad.

The flooding prepares for spring,

when the bears come out of their hibernation, waking up to the warmth,

flowers sprouting over the ground, all remnants of the summer before.

Dreary cold mornings morph into sunny afternoons,

spouts of rain all over, while the days grow warmer.

Summer days are coming to us.

The summer days when the grass is radiant green and the dandelions grow uncontrollably around the yard,

the dandelions with an unmatchable will to survive.

Around mid-July, the world catches ablaze.

The scorching sun burns all day at unbearable temperatures,

but at nightfall, it morphs into a different world.

Stars pop out under pink sunsets, and it is not too hot but not too cold.

Perfect weather

Flowers smell amazing, and all of your senses are heightened.

In September, the weather starts to calm,

the nights are the same as a cold autumn night

while the days are similar to the beginning of summer.

Eventually, the first leaf of autumn leaps from a great oak tree,

twirling and twisting on the way down,

flaunting gorgeous shades of orange and yellow,

putting on a show for the whole world to see, its brothers will follow suit and leap from the tree.

All other trees will eventually be bare

while the leaves are swept up, discarded, and then forgotten.

The world is lifeless and cold in November,

but it is over quickly.

Soon the snow is blowing around

and no summer is left in sight.

Fires are burning in houses to keep us warm.

Comfy, warm sweaters can be seen all around.

Christmas is right around the bend.

Then comes New Years

and the cycle of the seasons repeats.
