Serving Up Excellence

The Cody Fillies Volleyball team has often experienced significant success throughout the years. This year, new faces are around, with a new coaching staff and new players on the varsity court. The Filles have a winning record of 24-5 on the season and look to better it with the final weeks approaching. The Fillies will complete their final two conference games in the upcoming week.
There are four classes in Wyoming, and Cody has been competing in the top 4A division for the past few years, but because of the low population in the school, Cody was pushed back down into 3A this year. Rainey Powell, a senior outside hitter for the Fillies, speaks on being 3A, “It’s been a change, but we’ve had such a blast, and we’ve been successful and have had lots of fun,” along with transferring into different divisions, new strengths and weaknesses have arrived, but the team is still thriving.
Volleyball is similar to other sports in that one person cannot win the game alone. In a single rally, all six girls on each side of the court have an opportunity to touch the ball and contribute to the game, so having a strong relationship with the other girls on the team is essential for any success. As Mia Broussard, a sophomore outside/setter, says, creating bonds with her teammates is her favorite part of the game. This applies not only to volleyball but also to other work environments. It is challenging to run a successful business if the workers cannot communicate and correspond with each other.
Being a part of any team is rewarding but requires sacrifice, and the new freshman quickly realized what it takes to be involved in a sport at the high school level. Chole Harris, the freshman team libero, says, “We would still work hard in middle school, but you have to work a lot harder in high school, and there's more pressure, but it's also still super fun.” Hard work is needed with any skill, and the freshman team has experienced many rewarding moments throughout their season, including taking Kelly Walsh to three sets when their whole team consists of sophomores and juniors.
Volleyball is a fantastic sport with many positive outcomes, whether competitive or in the backyard with family. With only three weeks left in the 2024 volleyball season, the team is looking to capitalize on the hard work they have put into every practice and game. The final home game will be on October 25th; follow and support the Fillies with the final weeks of their season!
