Burning Bridges
By: MJ Whelan
It’s their fault, really
They gave you the matches
The gasoline came next
Now all that’s left is ash and smoke
There’s a euphoric feeling
Watching as it burns
Knowing that you are saving yourself
You can faintly hear their voice
Smoke fills your lungs
Sparks leap into the sky, like orange stars
The wood crackles
You listen and smile
Once it dies down to nothing
Then you finally turn away
You walk into the quiet woods, happy
